A woman was found dead in a South Bend business parking lot, and a suspect is now in custody.
South Bend Police were called around 7:35 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, to the 3200 block of Edison Road for a report of a woman down in a parking lot. When officers arrived, the female victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Based on evidence and information gathered, the St. Joseph County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT) was called in to lead the investigation.
Investigators say they were able to identify and locate a suspect vehicle within hours of the incident.
Police arrested 61-year-old Deborah Leyba, who was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail. She is currently awaiting a formal charging decision from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending notification of family members.
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, April 3, in Kalamazoo.
