Top five Primary Day races we’re watching in St. Joseph County

St. Joseph County voters are preparing to decide several high-stakes races in the Indiana primary election on Tuesday, May 5.
From an open sheriff’s seat to contested county and state races, the outcomes could significantly shape leadership across northern Indiana.
1. Sheriff’s race tops the ticket
The race for St. Joseph County Sheriff is drawing the most attention, as incumbent Bill Redman is term-limited. Redman is running on the Democratic ticket for St. Joseph County Commissioner, District 1 against Republican Carl Baxmeyer in the November election.
On the Democratic side for Sheriff, South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski is seeking the nomination, campaigning on experience and public safety leadership. His opponent is St. Joseph County Police Lieutenant Earl Wigfall. The winner will face Republican candidate Rod Laureys in November.
2. County Clerk primary battle
Republican incumbent Amy Rolfes faces a primary challenge from Peter Cook in a race that will determine who advances to the general election. The winner will face Democrat Stephanie Ball, making this one of the most consequential administrative races on the ballot.
3. County Council races could shift priorities
Multiple St. Joseph County Council seats are contested, with candidates focusing heavily on property taxes, government spending, and economic development. Republican incumbent Amy Drake facing a challenge from Matthew Clayton in District B. Republican Jamie O’Brien is taking on incumbent Dan Schatzle in District C. Schatzle was declared a “Republican not in good standing” by the Indiana Republican Party last year.
4. Indiana Senate District 11 primary
After voting “no” to resdistricitng in Indiana, last year, State Senator Linda Rogers gaineda Republican primary challenger in Dr. Brian Schmutler. Their race being closely watched as part of broader debates within the party at the state level and the outcome could influence legislative priorities in Indianapolis.
5. Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District
Voters will also weigh in on the race for Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District. Republican incumbent Rudy Yakym is seeking renomination and is unopposed in the Primary, while Democrats Jamee Decio and Shaun Maeyens are competing for their party’s nomination.
Polls are open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Primary Election Day, May 5.
