An Elkhart man with a lengthy criminal history has been sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison.

That’s after police discovered drugs, guns and a fake ID during an arrest earlier this year. 26-year-old Gomez Benitez was taken into custody in January on a probation violation warrant tied to a prior burglary case.

The Goshen News says police found him sleeping in a vehicle on Morton Avenue and say he was carrying a handgun.

During a search, officers also recovered another firearm, ammunition, nearly 29 grams of methamphetamine and a fake Ohio identification card.

A judge sentenced Gomez Benitez to multiple prison terms, totaling 19 years at the Indiana Department of Correction.
