An investigation is underway after a St. Joseph County Police officer fired a weapon during an incident.

According to the St. Joseph County Police Department, officers were called around 8:20 a.m. on Monday, May 11, to the 52000 block of Hastings Street for reports of trespassing and unwanted individuals.

Police say when officers arrived, one person fled on foot but was later caught and taken into custody.

At about the same time, a vehicle carrying two other individuals fled the scene. During the incident, an officer fired a weapon, though authorities say no one was struck and no injuries were reported.

Police say a pursuit followed before all individuals involved were eventually detained.

Under an interlocal agreement involving the St. Joseph County Police Department, Mishawaka Police Department, and South Bend Police Department, the South Bend Police Department is leading the investigation and will release additional information when it becomes available.

Once the outside investigation is complete, officials say the case will be turned over to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

The St. Joseph County Police Department says it will also conduct an internal investigation into the officer’s actions in accordance with department policy and procedures.

Per department protocol, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
