A man convicted in a deadly 2024 crash in South Bend has been sentenced to more than three decades in prison.

According to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office, 39-year-old Bobby D. Young of Elkhart was sentenced Monday, May 18, by Judge Elizabeth Hurley in connection with a crash that happened on August 24, 2024, at the intersection of Locust and Ireland Roads on South Bend’s south side.

The crash killed 50-year-old Kenneth Calhoun II of South Bend and seriously injured a 30-year-old South Bend woman.

Young pleaded guilty in April to causing death while operating a vehicle with a Schedule I or II controlled substance in his blood, a Level 4 felony, along with causing serious bodily injury while operating a vehicle with a controlled substance in his blood, a Level 5 felony. He also admitted to being a habitual offender.

The judge sentenced Young to 12 years on the death charge, six years on the serious bodily injury charge, and an additional 20 years for the habitual offender enhancement.

Under the plea agreement, the six-year sentence will run concurrently with the 12-year sentence, resulting in a total sentence of 32 years in the Indiana Department of Correction.
