A South Bend woman is facing multiple charges after police say she caused a wrong-way crash on the Indiana Toll Road early Sunday morning.
Indiana State Police were called shortly before 4:30 a.m. to the area near the 21 mile marker west of the Toll Road Travel Plaza for reports of a wrong-way driver. Minutes later, officers responded to a head-on crash near the Grant Street exit.
Police said one of the vehicles was fully engulfed in flames when troopers arrived.
Investigators say a 27-year-old man from Elkhart was driving in the proper lane when his vehicle was struck head-on by another vehicle allegedly driven by 44-year-old Jennifer Wallace.
Troopers said Wallace showed signs of impairment and officers detected the smell of alcohol while speaking with her. She reportedly agreed to field sobriety testing but refused a breath test. A blood draw was later conducted at a nearby hospital.
Wallace was taken to the Lake County Jail and faces several charges, including OWI Endangerment, Reckless Driving, Criminal Recklessness, Obstruction of Traffic, and OWI.
The Elkhart man suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. His vehicle was destroyed in the crash and resulting fire.
