A 19-year-old man has been arrested following a shooting at a South Bend apartment complex late Monday night.
Officers with the South Bend Police Department were called around 11:15 p.m. Monday, May 18, to the 800 block of West Laurel Woods Court on reports of gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound. Police say her injuries were not considered life-threatening, and she was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Investigators used a police drone, a K9 unit, and the department’s Real-Time Crime Center to track down the suspect, who was located hiding in a nearby building.
Police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Jamal Leonard. During an interview with detectives from the department’s Violent Crimes Unit, Leonard reportedly admitted to firing the gun and hiding from officers afterward. Leonard told investigators he acted in self-defense, but police say video evidence showed Leonard initiated the shooting.
The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Leonard with Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 felony, and Criminal Recklessness, a Level 6 felony.
Leonard is currently being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
