Severe storms that swept through northwest Indiana on Thursday night, June 11, forced the South Shore Line to suspend train service.

Railroad officials said extensive storm damage to tracks, overhead wires and utility poles has made it unsafe to operate trains across portions of the system.

To help stranded riders in Chicago, the South Shore Line operated a limited shuttle service, Thursday night, between Millennium Station and East Chicago. The shuttle continued through the departure of Train 101 from Millennium Station at 12:45 a.m. on Friday.

Train service resumed early Friday between Michigan City and Chicago’s Millennium Station, including trains on the Monon Corridor, thanks to repair work by NIPSCO and railroad crews.

However, there was still no train service, early Friday morning, between South Bend and Michigan City because of storm damage. Crews continued clearing debris and making repairs along that section of track and full train service was restored by 9 a.m.

The South Shore Line has resumed regular service from South Bend to Millennium Station in Chicago as of 7:45am on Friday, June 12, 2026.
