The Michigan City Police Department says it found no evidence of abuse after reviewing allegations that an Animal Control Officer mistreated a dog in the department’s custody.

The allegations surfaced in social media posts that included video of an officer handling and securing the dog. Police said the incident was already under review before the posts began receiving attention online.

According to the department, the dog has a documented history of high-energy and aggressive behavior, including attacks on other dogs. Police said pepper spray had previously been used to stop the dog from fighting with another animal, resulting in a use-of-force report.

The department reviewed available video, the animal’s history and other circumstances surrounding the incident. Police said the review found no evidence that the officer abused or attempted to harm the dog.

Police said Animal Control Officers are trained to handle frightened, injured and aggressive animals while protecting the safety of staff, the public and other animals.

The department is asking anyone with concerns about the treatment of animals in its custody to report them directly to police for review.
