South Bend Police are investigating three separate shooting incidents reported within about an hour, including two that left people hospitalized.

The first call came just before 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, near Nimtz Parkway and Bendix Drive, where witnesses reported a man firing a gun at passing vehicles.

Police said officers detained a man matching the description provided by witnesses shortly after arriving. Investigators also recovered evidence consistent with shots being fired. The suspect was arrested and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.

No injuries were reported in that incident.

About 30 minutes later, officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of North Johnson Street for another reported shooting. Police found a woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. She was taken to a hospital and was last reported in stable condition.

Roughly 20 minutes after that call, officers responded to a third shooting near the Colfax Bridge in downtown South Bend.

Police found a man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Investigators interviewed multiple witnesses and said the downtown shooting appears to have been an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the public.

The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is investigating all three cases separately.

Police said there is currently no evidence indicating the incidents are connected.
