The South Bend Common Council has overridden Mayor James Mueller’s veto of a resolution calling for a pause on the proposed Midwest Continental Divide Trail.

All six council members present Monday voted for the override. The council originally approved the resolution 7-to-1 last month, calling for more public input and greater scrutiny of potential costs.

Some North Liberty residents have raised concerns about the proposed trail, including its possible use of former railroad corridors through rural areas.

Council member Rachel Tomas Morgan, who was absent Monday, remains opposed to the resolution, saying it contains misleading information.

Mueller says the trail project is still years away from construction and he looks forward to continuing discussions with state and local partners.
