Elkhart County man arrested for alleged murder conspiracy

An Elkhart County man is facing a conspiracy-to-commit-murder charge after investigators say he allegedly tried to arrange the killing of another person.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit was contacted Aug. 10 about 34-year-old Reece Barrett.

According to investigators, Barrett allegedly recruited someone to carry out the killing and instructed that person to get an assault rifle and shoot the intended victim.

The two met the following day, with police providing the informant with audio and video recording equipment.

Investigators say Barrett provided additional instructions during that meeting.

Detectives later stopped Barrett’s vehicle near Pine Brook Drive South and County Road 6 and arrested him.

Barrett is being held on a $500,000 bond and is scheduled for an initial court hearing Aug. 25.
