A 36-year-old man faces multiple charges in connection with a fatal shooting during an alleged home invasion on South Bend’s northwest side.

Pedro Rodriguez Soto is charged with two counts of murder, several burglary counts and intimidation. The charges allege he aided or caused the offenses.

Police were called to the 1000 block of College Street on Aug. 3 and found 33-year-old Alberto Soto Rodriguez suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said witness statements, surveillance video and ballistic evidence indicate the two men were armed when they allegedly broke into a home through the kitchen.

According to police, a resident warned the intruders to leave and said the people inside were armed. One of the intruders then allegedly entered the living room and pointed a gun toward the residents. A resident opened fire, and ballistic evidence indicated one of the intruders also fired a semiautomatic handgun.

Police said a van later pulled into an alley and one intruder was seen dragging the other toward it. Residents reportedly fired again after one of the men allegedly pointed a gun toward them.

Rodriguez Soto later went to a hospital and claimed he and his brother had been doing landscaping nearby when they were injured during a possible robbery or home invasion. Investigators determined he was injured by debris but was not shot.

Rodriguez Soto was arrested following an investigation by the South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit and the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office. He remains in the St. Joseph County Jail.
