A 20-year-old Elkhart man has been formally charged in connection with a weekend shooting outside a gas station on West Hively Avenue.

The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office charged Justin O. Murillo Rodriguez with Level 5 felony criminal recklessness. His bond was set at $50,000, which he posted before being released from the Elkhart County Jail.

The shooting happened around 1:45 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, outside the gas station at 245 W. Hively Ave. Police said an officer heard gunfire near Prairie Street and West Lusher Avenue before a woman directed officers to the scene.

Investigators said several people and vehicles were in the parking lot when Murillo Rodriguez allegedly fired toward a vehicle. Police said several other shots were then fired, apparently by multiple people.

Murillo Rodriguez later arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound. He was treated, medically cleared and arrested.
