Two people have been arrested as part of a multi-state investigation into the alleged sexual abuse and exploitation of children.

The investigation involved Michigan State Police, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office in Florida and the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say the case began with information provided by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children involving suspected child sexual abuse material shared through the Kik messaging platform.

Investigators developed evidence involving a Michigan man and a Florida woman who have two young children together.

Authorities allege the woman sexually abused the children and that the man participated remotely and was also involved in the abuse.

Investigators in Florida searched the woman’s home in Vero Beach on Thursday. She was interviewed and arrested on felony charges related to the alleged abuse and distribution of child sexual abuse material.

In Michigan, Van Buren County investigators obtained a search warrant for the man’s home in Almena Township. The search was considered high-risk because investigators believed firearms could be present.

The search was completed without incident. Detectives seized a cellphone, two computers and a tablet that investigators believe may contain evidence.

The man was arrested and booked into the Van Buren County Jail. He faces multiple felony charges, including criminal sexual conduct and charges involving the production of child sexual abuse material.

The two children were removed from the suspects and are receiving medical care and other services.

The investigation remains ongoing.
