Indiana State Police said they have made contact with the person they believe was driving a minivan involved in the school bus crash on I-465 in Indianapolis last week.
ISP Sgt. John Perrine said detectives are still reviewing dash camera video and pictures and are talking with witnesses to the crash involving the Warren Township bus. Several students were on board the bus when it crashed, with at least 10 of them taking to hospitals for further treatment.
“We understand the anxiety and the fear,” ISP Sgt. John Perrine said to FOX 59. “We’re asking for some patience because there’s a lot of elements to this investigation that we have to work through, and we have to get it right.”
A blue Honda minivan was seen in dash cam video driving in front of the bus when it crashed. The search for the driver of that car lasted for about three days. Perrine said license plate-reading cameras helped them find the driver.
“Almost immediately from the crash scene, we were able to locate the van with license plate-reading cameras,” Perrine said. “That van left central Indiana for several days and returned on Friday, and our detectives were able to locate it with that technology.”
Perrine said the dash camera footage is key in their investigation, as they are working to determine if there are any possible criminal violations.
“We’re learning more about what happened at the crash and transitioning to finding who’s responsible and seeing what consequences, if any, there are,” Perrine added. “We have to be certain before we make any allegations about who was at-fault or what caused.”
As of Monday, no charges have been filed in the case.
