Three Illinois men were arrested after an alleged high-speed chase in Lake County that ended with Indiana State Police recovering two handguns along the pursuit route.
Police say a trooper spotted a blue Hyundai speeding east on Interstate 80 near the Indiana-Illinois line around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The vehicle was also allegedly following too closely, changing lanes unsafely and driving without taillights.
The trooper attempted to catch up as the Hyundai accelerated to more than 110 miles per hour, according to police.
The vehicle exited onto northbound Indianapolis Boulevard, where police say a back-seat passenger threw a handgun from the car near 169th Avenue. Investigators say the passenger later threw an extended magazine from the vehicle near 167th Avenue.
The chase continued through Hammond before the Hyundai returned to westbound I-80. Police say the driver abruptly braked and moved behind the patrol vehicle before troopers used a box-in maneuver to stop the Hyundai on the shoulder.
All three occupants were arrested without reported injuries.
Police identified the driver as 20-year-old Jalonnie Marks of University Park, Illinois. He faces a preliminary charge of resisting law enforcement, reckless driving and six traffic infractions.
Passenger Rodger Phillips, 21, of South Holland, Illinois, faces a preliminary charge of possession of a handgun by a serious violent felon. Police say Phillips had a felony conviction from Cook County dated Sept. 8.
A second passenger, 20-year-old Dontrell Sims of South Holland, faces a preliminary obstruction of justice charge.
Hammond police assisted state troopers in recovering two 9mm semi-automatic handguns, damaged magazines, a laser attachment and ammunition. The charges are preliminary.
