Plans to redevelop the former county courthouse property in downtown Elkhart are moving forward.
The Elkhart Redevelopment Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to accept a proposal from Barrett Realty Investments and Prince Property Group. The developers will now negotiate an agreement with the city.
The proposed 37-million-dollar project includes 124 apartments, six townhomes, 10-thousand square feet of commercial space and a parking structure with 300 spaces for residents and the public.
The design also calls for preserving portions of the former Elkhart High School façade.
Mayor Rod Roberson says the project would help extend downtown’s residential growth into the Second and Third Street corridor.
Construction could begin in late 2027, pending a finalized agreement and city approval.
