A LaPorte man is accused of trying to force a bar of soap into a child’s mouth as punishment.
Court documents say 34-year-old Daniel Schergen was in an SUV with his girlfriend and four children in August when a seven-year-old boy used profanity. Police allege Schergen asked his girlfriend to buy soap at a Kingsbury convenience store, then tried to put it in the child’s mouth.
Investigators say the boy was struck on the forehead during the struggle. Police also allege soap had been forced into the child’s mouth on an earlier occasion.
Schergen is charged with felony domestic battery. He was released from jail after posting bond. If convicted, he could face six to 30 months in prison.
