Driver injured in fiery crash on U.S. 20 bypass in South Bend

Around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, South Bend Fire Department crews responded to a vehicle fire on the bypass near the Ireland Road bridge.

Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire.

An investigation revealed the vehicle had left the roadway and struck a concrete portion of the bridge.

The driver was outside the vehicle following the crash, and a passing semi-truck driver helped them move away from the vehicle as it caught on fire.

The driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Nobody else was inside the vehicle.

Westbound lanes were closed for about 20 minutes before one lane reopened. Traffic remained restricted to one lane until the vehicle was towed from the scene.
