FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) — Construction on Interstate 65 in central Indiana is creating problems for first responders who need to reach accident scenes.

At least 12 serious accidents occurred last year in constructions zones on I-65 between the south side of Indianapolis and Columbus.

Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Harry Maginity tells the (Franklin) Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/1QlbfQo ) that the area between Greenwood and Franklin is particularly difficult for emergency crews because the road is lined with concrete barriers.

Greenwood Fire Chief James Sipes says the biggest challenge is pinpointing the exact location of an accident and then deciding which way to enter the interstate.

State transportation officials plan to discuss improvements to get first responders to accidents safer and faster.
