Indianapolis police defend fatal shooting of man with knife

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis police say officers had no choice but to shoot a man brandishing a large knife on the city’s northwest side.

Police say 25-year-old Christopher Goodlow of Indianapolis was fatally shot around 12 p.m. Saturday as officers responded to a call about an apparently suicidal man.

The Indianapolis Star reports some area residents expressed anger and questioned whether it was appropriate to shoot someone with a knife.

But Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Richard Riddle told reporters that Goodlow refused repeated orders to drop the knife. A police statement says a stun gun also didn’t subdue Goodlow and that he kept threatening officers.

Police shootings have become a national issue. Riddle says there have been at least 20 shootings by Indianapolis police this year, with around half involving fatalities.
