Federal review faults state safety agency for understaffing

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A federal review of Indiana’s workplace safety agency faults it for having too few inspectors and often missing potentially deadly hazards.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s annual evaluation of the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration says it took almost 72 days on average for the state to investigate complaints during fiscal year 2014. The national standard is five days.

Matt Lloyd, a spokesman for Gov. Mike Pence, says Indiana’s workplace injury rate is nearly at a record low and the state has implemented many of the federal report’s recommendations.

The Indianapolis Star reports that some safety experts say the review’s findings indicate the state’s priority is promoting a business-friendly environment and limiting regulations.
