INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana state lawmakers are set for a discussion about the need for additional road funding. A legislative committee meeting Thursday at the Statehouse will hear from a Tippecanoe County official about the financing needs for local and state roads.

Debate over road conditions has become a major early theme in the 2016 gubernatorial campaign. The issue gained prominence this summer during a monthlong emergency closure of an Interstate 65 bridge near Lafayette, which is in Tippecanoe County.

Republican Gov. Mike Pence on Tuesday unveiled a spending proposal that would devote an additional $1 billion over four years toward state highway projects.

But some critics say Pence’s spending plan amounts to a drop in the bucket and that more money is also needed to maintain city and county roads.
