Indiana House Republicans stand by choosing Jud McMillin as majority leader despite ethical issues

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — House Republicans stand by their decision to give a leadership post to an Indiana lawmaker with known ethical issues who recently resigned.

Speaker Brian Bosma says former House Majority Leader Jud McMillin was chosen last November despite the ethical issues because of his strong suits. He described McMillin as hardworking and smart.

Before resigning last week, the Brookville Republican sent a group text message apologizing for “anything offensive” sent from his cellphone. The next day he posted on Facebook that he made “mistakes” and was focusing on his family.

McMillin previously resigned as a prosecutor in Ohio after acknowledging a relationship with a domestic violence victim. He has not responded to requests for comment.

House Republicans are expected to choose McMillin’s replacement on Tuesday.
