Ben Davis, Pike girls basketball teams have seasons canceled after brawl on Saturday

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced Monday that girls’ basketball teams at Ben Davis and Pike High Schools have had the rest of their seasons canceled following Saturday’s bench-clearing brawl.

The game will go down as a double forfeit, both teams will be barred from the state tournament and spend next season on probation. Coaches and all varsity and junior varsity players at the game also must complete an online sportsmanship course.

IHSAA commissioner Bobby Cox called the fight “egregious” and “dangerous.”

It’s unclear if either school will take the case to court.

Last year, the IHSAA issued a similar ruling following a fight in northwestern Indiana between two boys’ teams. A court injunction blocked the penalty and one of the schools, Griffith, won the Class 3A state title.
