Second day of Alberto Cruz murder trial in death of Alma Del Real focuses on confession, cell phone tracking

Testimony in the Alberto Cruz trial on Wednesday, May 18, centered around cell phone tracking and Cruz’s confession.

Cruz is being tried for murder in the death of 22-year-old Alma Del Real.

In one of his early interviews with police, Cruz said that he was asleep at home. A cell phone investigator testified Wednesday that cell phone towers tracked Cruz’s phone from South Bend and down to Marshall County on the morning of April 12, 2015, according to our news partners ABC 57. Del Real’s body was found in Marshall County after a confession from Cruz.

Video of that confession was shown in court on Wednesday. Cruz was seen crying as he told a special agent what happened.

Jurors also learned about Cruz being placed on suicide watch while he was at St. Joseph County Jail.

Testimony resumes Thursday, when the defense is expected to make its case.
