South Bend firefighter gets promotion to assistant chief role

A leader at the South Bend Fire Department is getting promoted this spring.

Battalion Chief Jim Luccki was appointed to serve as assistant chief of operations beginning April 1, according to Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s office.

“During his nearly 40-year career, Jim has distinguished himself as a trusted leader and strategic advisor,” Chief Steve Cox said in a statement. “His work ethic and experience on the department’s dive and hazmat teams have made Jim him a great asset to South Bend Fire.”

Cox recommended the promotion to Buttigieg, who appointed Luccki to the new role.

Luccki joined the department in 1979 and has served in various leadership roles in the last 25 years.
