Elkhart man arrested after crashing into another vehicle, running from the scene

An Elkhart man was arrested on preliminary drunken driving charges after he crashed into another car on Old U.S. 33 and then ran off, according to a news release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash happened on Saturday, Dec. 5, around 11:30 p.m.

Jason Robert Clayton, 35, was in custody on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a crash and driving without corrective lenses after he was located, according to our reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth.

Clayton failed a field sobriety test and a blood test showed his blood-alcohol content to be 0.261, which is more than three times the legal limit of 0.08, according to the crash report.

The driver of the other vehicle was traveling on Old U.S. 33 when he slowed to turn onto Tower Road. Clayton was also westbound on Old U.S. 33 but failed to see the other vehicle slow and crashed into the back of the car, the news release states.

Sheriff’s officers found Clayton walking southbound on Apple Road, south of S.R. 933, which was nearly two miles from the scene of the collision.

The other driver, an 18 year-old man from Osceola, refused medical treatment.
