A dog park could be coming to South Bend, though there’s no specific timeline for it.

A group of local dog owners organized as a group called “Dog Park for South Bend” launched a website, a Facebook page and petition drive recently in an effort to get the city to agree, the South Bend Tribune reported.

For the last two months, dog owners have used the fenced lot at 525 Niles Ave. as a makeshift dog park, but the property and the former Madison Center for Children building located next to it will be going on auction Dec. 9.

The city of South Bend budgeted $150,000 for a potential dog park under the new parks master plan, which will likely be funded from a future bond or grant or a tax increment finance district, the Tribune reported.

At that budget, the starting auction price for the Niles Avenue and Madison Center — $900,000 — is definitely out of the price range, and the property owner isn’t likely to sell them separately.

The city has instead identified a potential dog park within Rum Village Park, the Tribune reported.
