Indoor sports facility under consideration for Mishawaka or South Bend

The St. Joseph County Visitors Bureau is looking into whether an indoor sports facility that would host travel youth athletic teams would be successful in South Bend or Mishawaka.

The agency, also known as Visit South Bend Mishawaka, will pay Chicago-based Hunden Stategic Partners about $50,000 for the study, the South Bend Tribune reported.

The money would come from St. Joseph County’s hotel and motel tax board. The study would begin in January and go through the end of April.

St. Joseph County leaders are hopeful that a facility would be feasible in the county and believe it would bring in families to stay in hotels, eat at restaurants and shop at local stores, boosting the local economy.

Rob DeCleene, Visit South Bend Mishawaka’s executive director, told the Tribune that the facility would ideally have six to eight basketball and volleyball courts and one to two indoor soccer fields, with the possibility of room for a variety of other sports.

Find out where the facility could be built as well as other details in the full story from the South Bend Tribune.
