Officer injured after chain reaction crash near New and Hickory roads

A police officer was hospitalized with a head injury after he was involved in a crash near the intersection of New and Hickory roads between South Bend and Bremen.

The officer was responding to a call of a vehicle on the side of New Road at about 7:30 a.m., according to WNDU. The officer saw a school bus and he and the vehicle in front of him both began slowing down.

The vehicle traveling behind the officer’s unmarked SUV crashed into the back of the officer’s SUV, which then crashed into the back of the vehicle in front of it, WSBT reported.

The officer suffered a head injury but was able to walk himself to an ambulance.

The driver of the school bus witnessed the crash, but the bus was not involved. The students who were on the bus were taken to school in another vehicle.
