AM General in South Bend was awarded a $428 million contract to build ambulances for the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve and U.S. Army National Guard for six years, the company announced Tuesday, Sept. 8.
The contract includes an agreement to build 654 ambulance chassis vehicles for the National Guard in exchange for $89.5 million, according to a news release from the company.

The ambulances manufactured under the contract will be used by the military through 2050.
“We are pleased to continue to support the active and future use of the more than 160,000 (Humvees) currently in service as part of U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Reserves and National Guard fleets,” Chris Vanslager, AM General’s vice president of programs and business development, said in a statement.
The contract comes after AM General was awarded a $373 million foreign military contract in July for sales in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kenya, Lebanon, Ukraine and Tunisia.
Earlier this year, AM General also began manufacturing luxury Mercedes Benz SUVs that are sold exclusively in China.
