Heat advisory in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday in Michiana

Michiana residents should make sure not to spend all day outside and to stay extra hydrated during the hot and humid weather on Saturday, July 18.

A heat advisory is in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday for most of northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan, according to the National Weather Service.

High temperatures are expected to reach the lower 90s, but the heat index could range from 100 to 110 degrees throughout the afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are possible, especially for elderly and very young people and people with respiratory conditions.

Anyone going outside should wear lightweight and loose clothing and drink plenty of water, according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Anyone outside should take frequent breaks in the shade or inside with the air conditioning on.

“Don’t wait until you start feeling symptoms before taking measures to combat heat exhaustion,” said Dr. Michael Olinger, state emergency medical services director. “Know your body’s limit. Don’t overexert yourself when outdoors and drink plenty of fluids, even if you’re not thirsty.”

Symptoms of heat illness include muscle cramps, dizziness, nausea, lack of sweating despite the heat and throbbing headaches. Anyone experiencing heat illness should be moved inside and drink water or a non-carbonated sports drink and use washcloths damp with cold water or ice packs to help cooling down.

If a person becomes unconscious or there is no improvement, go to the emergency room or call 911.
