Blueberry Month 2015: Where to pick fresh blueberries in St. Joseph County

Scattered in waffles, baked in a warm pie or enjoyed plain as a snack, blueberries are the crown jewels of summer.

July is National Blueberry Month and blueberries are ripe for the picking in Michiana. Plants have been in bloom since May, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at Flavor 574, and are usually fair game to pick by Fourth of July weekend.

There are plenty of places to pick your own blueberries in Michiana if you’re willing to take a day trip, but there are some in our own backyard, Flavor 574 reports, including The Blueberry Ranch, 54743 Buckeye Road, Mishawaka.

Afterward, you can freeze berries to keep them fresh for a while, or toss them in lemonade, cobbler or a smoothie. Visit Flavor 574 for recipe inspiration with blueberries.

What’s your favorite way to eat blueberries during the summer?
