An 18-year-old White Pigeon, Mich., woman was found guilty of possession of marijuana on Tuesday, July 14, in connection to an August 2014 incident in which police found alcohol and marijuana inside a vehicle.

Stephanie Lewis, 18, was one of two Constantine High School students arrested in the early morning hours of Aug. 17, according to a news release from the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office.

Lewis was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over by a Cass County Sheriff’s Department deputy for an improper U-turn in Dowagiac, Mich. During the traffic stop, the officer saw an open bottle of gin in the back seat of the vehicle, according to the news release.

Lewis and the 18-year-old female driver were asked to leave the vehicle. Police found two marijuana blunts — or hollowed out cigars filled with marijuana — in the vehicle and a large amount of alcohol in the trunk of the car, including Bud Light beer, Coors Light beer, Bud Light Strawberita and Mike’s Hard Lemonade, according to the news release.

At the scene of the arrest, Lewis told officers that one of the blunts was hers, but then changed her story and said that the blunt belonged to the driver and she was protecting her as a friend, according to the news release.

The jury convicted Lewis after deliberating for 25 minutes.

The driver in the vehicle pleaded guilty to various charges at an earlier hearing and was sentenced to probation.

Lewis could be sentenced up to one year in jail and up to a $1,000 fine. A sentencing hearing has been set for 9 a.m. Aug. 13.
