A South Bend police officer charged with a civil rights violation by the U.S. Justice Department is expected to face federal trial in October.

Theodore Robert, 40, was charged in May with depriving a person of civil rights while acting under the color of law.
He was placed on paid administrative leave for an unrelated incident in November, but the South Bend Board of Public Safety placed Robert on unpaid leave after he was federally charged.

Robert is accused of assaulting a handcuffed man at the St. Joseph County Jail on May 30, 2010. Surveillance footage shows Robert shoving the handcuffed man around a room inside the jail and punching him.
His federal trial is set to begin Oct. 19, according to Fox 28.
