$6 million dollar question in front of Elkhart City Council on whether to grant bond for wide range of city improvement projects

The Elkhart City Council could decide tonight whether to approve six million dollars in bonds for a list of development projects in and around the city center.

The projects include upgrades to Main Street north and south of the downtown area, improvements to the Civic Plaza and improvements to the New York Central Railroad Museum.

The money would also be used to purchase of the old Alick’s Home Medical Equipment property on the north side of East Jackson Boulevard.

The city would pay $600,000 and spend up to $300,000 more to raze the six structures on the land ahead of its possible redevelopment as a public riverfront recreation spot, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth.

During a special meeting on Saturday to discuss the proposed bond money, frustration was expressed by Elkhart City Council members Brian Dickerson and David Henke, concerned about the large amount of money being asked for as well as a lack of oversight on how the money is spent.

The two councilmen say their constituents want the proposal tabled, according to ABC-57 News.
