A house fire was extinguished after multiple firefighters worked for more than two hours on Thursday morning, April 2.

Just after 5 a.m., crews were called to the 16000 block of Madison Road in St. Joseph County, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners, ABC 57.

The fire was extinguished at about 7 a.m. and then crews started working on hot spots. The fire took so long to extinguish because there were no nearby fire hydrants and crews had to go more than five miles away to get more water, according to Emily Kinzer with ABC 57.
Multiple units were on scene for backup, including Wakarusa, Madison Township, Lakeville, Penn, Bremen and La Paz, St. Joseph County fire dispatchers confirmed.

Three people — a couple and their daughter — were inside the home when the fire started, according to WNDU. The family escaped the house through the bedroom window. The daughter broke her arm during the escape, but no other injuries were reported.
Witnesses in the area told 95.3 MNC they saw flames at least 20 feet high, according to previous reporting.
Avoid the area if possible.
