LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder says negotiations with legislative leaders over a $1.2 billion road-funding plan are at an impasse.

The talks broke down during a private meeting Tuesday at the Capitol. Snyder tells reporters he and the leaders have found common ground on many issues, but “other issues … made it difficult to come to a consensus.”

The Republican governor declined to elaborate. Republican House Speaker Kevin Cotter said the biggest issue is “tax relief.”

Senate Republicans have pushed for an income tax cut tied to increased fuel taxes and vehicle registration fees.

Snyder has long pushed for more funding to improve deteriorating roads. Voters in May rejected a sales tax hike that would have triggered more money for transportation.
