VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — The state is taking public comment on a request to add autism to the list of conditions that qualify for medical marijuana.

A hearing is planned for Wednesday in Lansing. The petition was filed by Lisa Smith of Wayne County’s Van Buren Township whose 6-year-old son takes oral doses of oil extracted from marijuana.

Noah is registered to use marijuana to control epileptic seizures. The effect on his autism was an unexpected benefit. Smith says kicks, punches and other severe acts have stopped.

Smith wants other families to get the same result. That’s why she wants autism added to the medical marijuana list.

Dr. Harry Chugani of Children’s Hospital of Michigan says it’s not for every child with autism. But he sees it as an option for extreme cases.
