South Bend casino plans get support, opposition from local groups

The group opposing the proposed building of a tribal village in South Bend by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians now has a counterpoint group that’s in favor of the idea.

Citizens for a Better Michiana oppose the proposed construction project, which would put a tribal village including a casino near the intersection of the bypass and S.R. 23.

This week, a new grass roots group supporting the idea has made itself known. It’s called the Michiana Pokagon Alliance, and includes former top cop Chuck Hurley, and Mishawaka Common Councilman Michael Compton, who is also the Business Manager for IBEW Local 153.

Compton says the project could employ upwards of 1500 construction workers at its peak.

There have been concerns that the facility would clash with state limits on gaming facilities.
