The man police say shot and killed another man at a South Bend gas station on Tuesday has been charged with murder.

Emmett Calvin White, 58, is being held without bond at the St. Joseph County Jail.

According to a release from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office, shortly before 7 p.m. March 24, the South Bend Police Department received report of a shooting at the Always Open Gas Station, 1401 N. Bendix Drive.

Upon arrival, 52 year-old Gary Gray was found outside near a gas pump suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

Gray was pronounced dead at the hospital and County Metro Homicide was called in to handle the investigation.

Investigators learned that Emmett Calvin White stopped to pump gas at the Always Open Gas Station, with Gray as a passenger in his car. Gray got out of the vehicle and was allegedly shot by White after a discussion.

Police identified White by tracing the credit card he used to purchase gas at the station, according to court documents filed in the case. The credit card was found in his wallet when he was arrested.

A person who witnesses the shooting also positively identified White.
