Police: Indiana inmate who died in custody was agitated

FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) — State police say a 19-year-old central Indiana man who died in police custody after being found unconscious in the back of a jail transport van was being taken to a hospital for an evaluation after he became “increasingly agitated.”

Kyler L. Myers of Greenwood was arrested early Monday by Greenwood police and booked into the Johnson County Jail just south of Indianapolis on preliminary charges of reckless possession of paraphernalia and disorderly conduct.

Police say the jail nurse told staff Monday afternoon to take Myers to an adjacent hospital after he reportedly “became increasingly agitated with other inmates and displayed unusual behavior.”

Police say Myers was conscious and got into the van, but officers found him unresponsive when the van arrived at the hospital.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.
