Delaware County Sheriff Scroggins dies week after surgery

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) — A central Indiana sheriff has died a week after having shoulder surgery.

Delaware County Sheriff Mike Scroggins died Friday morning in Elyria, Ohio, at the home of a woman he had been dating.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Jason Walker tells The (Muncie) Star Press Scroggins awoke, fell and died shortly thereafter. He says Scroggins had “major shoulder surgery” at an Ohio hospital on May 8.

The 52-year-old Scroggins had a history of health problems, including multiple back surgeries.

Scroggins had been a law enforcement officer for nearly 30 years. A Democrat, he was elected sheriff in 2010.

The Democratic Party will hold a caucus to select someone to fill the remaining 3½ years of Scroggins’ second term.
