Residents of New Buffalo apartment complex displaced after fire

Several families were unable to return to their apartments after a fire at a New Buffalo Township apartment complex. 

Around 7:04 p.m. Monday, May 25, fire crews were called to Oakview Estates Apartments, 17670 W. U.S. 12, New Buffalo Township, for the fire, according to a news release from the St. Joseph County (Mich.) Sheriff’s Department.

Sixteen apartments were evacuated, according to the release. Crews were able to contain the fire to one apartment. According to the release, it appeared the fire started in a kitchen and spread throughout the apartment, causing extensive damage. 

Residents in seven apartments were unable to return to the units because of smoke or water damage, according to the release. The American Red Cross is helping those residents with housing and food.
