Father, stepmother charged in death of malnourished girl

DETROIT (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a father and stepmother with murder, torture and child abuse after their 5-year-old girl was found malnourished, dehydrated and abused in a Port Huron home.

St. Clair County Prosecutor Mike Wendling tells The Associated Press that the warrants were signed Friday morning for 25-year-old Andrew Maison and 27-year-old Hilery Maison. They were arrested after police found Mackenzie Maison unresponsive Tuesday. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Bond was denied during video arraignments for the Maisons. Hilery Maison denied the charges and asked for an attorney. Andrew Maison also has no attorney.

An autopsy was completed Thursday, but results haven’t been made public.

Three other children were removed from the home. Two were placed in foster care, and Wendling says a 3-year-old girl remains hospitalized for malnourishment.
