Driver in hit-and-run crash arrested for OWI, police say

A man in Elkhart County was arrested on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a crash.

It happened just after 4 p.m. Thursday, May 28.

Paul Holt, 78, was driving on County Road 18 near County Road 13 when his vehicle went crossed the center line and collided with another vehicle, according to a police report from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Police say he left the scene, but was later located on County Road 13 north of County Road 18.

He told officers he picked up his phone when it rang, but then dropped it, according to the report. His vehicle drifted into the other lane while he was trying to pick up back up.

He failed field sobriety tests. Police are waiting on the results of a blood test.

Holt was incarcerated at the Elkhart County Jail.
