Woman dies after crash at Western Avenue and Walnut Street in South Bend

A 66-year-old woman died after a crash Monday, June 1, in South Bend — just one day after her niece died in a separate deadly crash.

Josefina Bueno died after she was taken to Memorial Hospital following a crash underneath the viaduct at Western Avenue and Walnut Street, 95.3 MNC’s news partners ABC 57 reported.

The crash happened just before 3 p.m. when a white car heading east on Western attempted to turn left onto Walnut and collided with a westbound silver car, WSBT reported.

There is a “no-left turn” sign at the intersection. Officers told WSBT the intersection saw the most crashes in 2014 and there have been about two crashes there every week in 2015.

The driver of the vehicle Bueno was in and a 14-year-old who was in the backseat were also taken to Memorial Hospital. The driver of the silver car was taken to Memorial Hospital to be treated for neck and back pain.

Bueno was the aunt of 33-year-old Monica Bueno, WSBT reported. Monica Bueno died after a crash at Main Street and Indiana Avenue in South Bend at about 3 a.m. Sunday, May 31.
