CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — A prosecutor says no one will face criminal charges over a brawl that broke out during a boys basketball game between Hammond and Griffith high schools in February.

The Griffith police chief last month sought charges against some people involved in the fight, but Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter announced Friday that their poor judgment didn’t merit criminal charges.

The fight happened at the Feb. 7 game when a Hammond player shoved a Griffith player from behind and sent him headfirst into a mat on the wall. Players and coaches rushed onto the floor, along with some spectators, and some punches were exchanged.

A judge overturned an Indiana High School Athletics Association decision to cancel the season for both teams, and Griffith reached the Class 3A state championship game.
